In an effort to fight obesity, New York City has proposed a ban on most sugary sodas 16 oz and over.  The beverage industry is mounting an aggressive advertising, PR, and street canvassing effort to thwart the proposal.  While fighting obesity in this country is a serious issue, Mayor Bloomberg and the NYC Board of Health are attacking this problem the wrong way.  Consumers should always have the freedom to choose, and common sense dictates that if consumers want a certain amount of (an over-sized) product, they will likely buy 2 of the smaller sizes to satisfy their desires.  Would it not be more productive to educate the public better on the risks and dangers of consuming large quantities of certain food and beverages that may be linked to obesity and let them choose what to put in their body?  The bigger issue here is what is the next legal product – or serving size – for a city, state, or federal agency to “ban”  from consumers?  I’ll let you use your imagination, as it’s a scary thought where this could lead.
